Why did Jesus Command his disciples to keep the Passover?
Why must we keep the Passover today as Christians?
In the time of the Exodus, Jehovah God commanded the Israelites to keep the Passover in order to be freed from the Slavery of the Egyptian Pharaoh. This was done by the slaughtering of a lamb and spreading the blood of it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of their houses so that when destruction came, God knew to pass over that house. (Exodus Chapter 12)
why, in the time of the New Testament, was Jesus commanding his disciples to keep the Passover? They were not in any physical slavery...
Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin." Jn 8:34
Who on earth doesn't sin?
"For the wages of sin is death.." Romans 6:23
Everyone has to face death, therefore everyone is paying for their sin.
We are all enslaved to sin and death.
What does this have to do with the Passover?
"My appointed time is near I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house...While they were eating Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it and gave it to his disciples saying, "Take and eat this is my body." Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them saying, "Drink from it all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." Matthew 26:18-27
Christ's blood, given on the Passover, allows us the forgiveness of sins. The Passover frees us from the slavery of sin and death so that we can enter the Eternal Kingdom of Heaven.
Many today keep the Old Testament Passover, however, as Christians we must keep the New Covenant Passover which is at the same appointed time, yet given by Christ through his body and blood.
