What is the purpose of God's law?

I always used to say "I don't need church to follow God, I worship God in my own way."
I'm sure many have felt the same way.
I never quite understood what the purpose was to attending church and the only answer I had every received to my questions were "this is the way to worship God."

Fair enough, but does God just want to see who will worship him and sing and dance? Is that the purpose to keeping God's law?

Why did God give us a law to follow?

In the time of the Old Testament, the people had to follow the law of Moses in order to be cleansed of their sins. Without the law they would die from sin. However, in the time of Moses, the law was imperfect, that is why the scriptures say,

"If perfection could have been obtained through the levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the law was given to the people), why was there still need for another priest to come, one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron?" HEB 7:11

In the time of the Old testament, the temple was under the authority of the High priest Aaron and his sons (the levitical priesthood). At this time, in order to atone for the sins of the people, they would offer up burnt sacrifices to God (animal sacrifices). The priests themselves had to be atoned for their sins because they themselves were imperfect beings. Therefore, the law was imperfect.

However, the Bible states that another priest had to come, in the order of Melchizedek. What is the purpose of the new priest?

To bring perfection to the law.

"Where Jesus, who went before us, became a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek." HEB 6:20
"Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant." HEB 7:22

In order for the people to be atoned for their sins in the time of the Old Testament, they had to constantly offer up burnt sacrifices to God for every sin they committed. I don't know about you, but I can't afford that many lambs per week.

This is why Christ came.

"Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself." HEB 7:27

"You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you." Romans 8:8

If you notice, this verse is conditional. If we have the Spirit of God in us, we are no longer controlled by the sinful nature. ("Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God" v.8)
However, if we do not have the Spirit of God in us, we are still in fact living under the control of our sin and therefore cannot please God.

"Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation.....because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God." 8:12-14

"Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of Promise." GAL 4:28

And what is that promise?

"And this is what he promised us - even eternal life." 1 JN 2:25

Therefore, if we have the Spirit of God in us we become the children of promise, which is the gift of eternal life.

2000 years ago, Christ came as the example of a Son in order to show us how to be true sons of God.
"I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." JN 13:15

"This is the one who came by water and blood - Jesus Christ." 1 JN 5:6

"For there are three that testify: The Spirit, the Water, and the Blood, and the three are in agreement." v. 7

"And this water symbolizes baptism." 1 Peter 3:21

"In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.." Eph 1:7
"For my flesh is real food, and my blood is real drink." Jn 6:55

In order for us to walk in accordance with the Spirit and receive the Spirit of God, we must first be baptized and then cleansed by the blood of Christ. However, Christ said that his blood is real drink. Then in order to have the Spirit within us we have to receive the blood of Christ. How?

As we know, 3500 years ago the people were cleansed through the blood of the animal sacrifices, however, we are cleansed through the blood of Christ's sacrifice.

"For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the festival, not with the old yeast.." 1 Cor 5:7

"When the hour came Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer...He took bread gave thanks and broke it and gave it them saying, "take and eat this is my body".. In the same way he took the cup saying, this cup is the new covenant in my blood which is poured out for you." LK 22:14-20

Through the feast of the Passover, we receive the promise of Christ's blood. This is the New Covenant Promise that he brought us when he came as High Priest in the order of Melchizedek. Through this Promise, we receive eternal life and become the sons of God. Only the sons of God are given the promise of eternal life, they are children of Promise.

That is why the Bible says, IF we receive the Spirit. We must first receive the Passover to be called sons of God.

"He said to me: It is done, I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son." Rev 21:6

God's sons will receive the free gift of the water of life in the last days. According to the BIble, who is giving us the free gift of the water of life? In 21:6 it says God will.

"The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!". And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty let him come; and whoever wishes let him take the free gift of the water of life." Rev 22:17

Without the Spirit we have no life and we cannot be called sons of God and therefore still live by sin. The Spirit is God our Father. Then the bride, is God our Mother.

"I saw the Holy City the New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God prepared as a bride..."21:2

"But the Jerusalem that is above is free and She is our Mother.....Now you brothers like Isaac are children of promise." Gal 4:26-28

Then what is so important about the Law?
"So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith." Gal 3:24

Without the Law we wouldn't know who Christ is. In the last days, Christ is both our Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother. We know this because they brought back the law that leads us to life. Without knowing that the Passover gives eternal life and that we must be baptized just as Christ was, how could we be called sons of God?

Would we know this simply by reading the word on our own and following God on our own terms?

"How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent?" Romans 10:14-15

How could we know about the Spirit and the Bride, Father and Mother, without someone preaching it to us. And how could we posssibly preach it unless Christ sent us to preach this good news.

"Come, follow me, Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." Matt 4:19

Just as Christ sent out his disciples 2000 years ago to preach his word. So in the last days, The Spirit and the Bride have come to this earth and have sent the Church of God World Mission society to preach the news of Salvation given to us by the New Covenant, brought by the blood of Christ, the Passover.

"So then the law is holy, and the command is holy, righteous, and good." Romans 7:12

Because Christ came as our High priest, the law is perfect and God's commands for us leads us to eternal life. The law was created for us to be made perfect sons of God, because it has led us to Christ who testified to come again to bring us Salvation (Hebrews 9:28)
